What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is the same crystal, grown above ground instead of below it. Two methods produce them:

  • CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) grows the crystal layer by layer from carbon-rich gas.
  • HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) recreates the mantle's conditions directly.

Both finish with a stone that is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined diamond. It has the same hardness, the same refractive index, and the same fire. Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. This is the point people trip over most, so it's worth being blunt.

In 2018 the U.S. Federal Trade Commission removed the word "natural" from its official definition of a diamond. Its position is that a diamond is a diamond whether it grew in the ground or in a lab. The two leading grading labs, GIA and IGI, grade lab-grown diamonds using the same four measures — cut, color, clarity, and carat — that they apply to mined stones.
